5 Steps: How Moms Can Prevent the Extra Clutter this Holiday Season

I recently discovered the magic of having a de-cluttered home. You guys, I can’t tell you how much a difference it has made in my life! My Tupperware cupboard is still bursting with mismatched food storage containers but all my surfaces are clean and there are no more piles of STUFF. Minimalist is not quite the right word for this busy mama, but I am doing my best to eliminate all the extra and find a proper home for EVERYTHING. Both my little girls have birthdays during the Holidays so the influx of more stuff is something I am desperately trying to manage while still giving them all the birthday and Christmas magic. Here are 5 ways I’ve found to prevent the extra clutter.

1|| Give 10 to Get More I love the idea of leaving 10 toys for Santa to take with him for other little boys and girls. The excitement of the big man coming with new toys for under the tree can give kids the encouragement they might need to want to get rid of some of the toys they no longer play with.

2|| Amazon Wish List When the girls were born we started an Amazon wish list. This way all our family members can get them gifts any time of year and know that it’s something the girls will, a) LOVE b) Don’t already have c) Is approved by mom. A few of the things on our approved by mom list this year are Crayola Window Markers, Disney Princess Cook Book, and Jell-O Slime.

3|| Annual Passes/Experiences When you are gifting for little kids, a membership card isn’t going to get the best reaction. Gift it with something themed. IE: If the gift is a ZOO membership, maybe a stuffy or puzzle of animals. Memberships to Aquariums, Zoos, Theme parks, and other local activities are such a great way to support the parents financially and give them a way to prioritize quality time doing something that requires no cleanup. An experience gift is a great way to create memories, foster adventure and be a part of their learning.

4|| Monthly Subscriptions There are so many monthly subscription boxes to sign kids and families up for now. A few of our favorites are Highlights Magazine Puzzles and Activity book, Kiwi Crate STEM activities for all ages, or Bitsbox Coding activities for ages 5+, Popsticks sticker subscription, and my personal favorite Foodstirs a monthly organic baking kit.

5|| Physical Activity Instead of toys that have 100 little pieces of clutter to clean up, get the kids in your life a way to get their wiggles out! A mini trampoline, or scooter, an indoor swing both on our lists! We got Bexley an indoor/outdoor bounce house and it’s been the best way for them to get some of that excess energy out in a productive and fun way!
